Scrap Control Update and Quilt of Valor

The 2 1/2" strip scrap bin is still full .... as I have only added 3 more blocks. As soon as possible, I will pull out all of the long strips (brights only) and start matching them up into strip sets.

The Quilt Of Valor below that has taken over the sewing room, was loaded on the long arm, basted, then quilted.  I used my pattern "Stars Over Scott", for a quick finish. Once the binding and label is done, it will be off to California for a young veteran, whose service we are so thankful for.

The "Stars Over Scott", uses 6" (finished) half square triangles, and measures 72" X 84" -- since I used larger HSTs, I omitted the borders.  The great thing about this pattern, you can use any size HST you want to achieve the quilt size needed.

I follow along with Sarah at Confessions of a Fabric Addict, who helps us stay accountable to the growing scrap bins. Check with her often for ideas on how to tame the stash.

Rainbow Challenge, Pink Album Blocks

The addition of the pink has blended this collection and added a little brightness.  Years ago (late 1990s), I took a class from Little Quilts author Mary Ellen Von Holt.  I never forgot her recommendation to add "Pink" to a very scrappy quilt (even masculine quilts).... she is so right!  I never forgot that little tidbit.

Scrap Control and H2H Challenge

Not much done regarding Scrap Control...I had a request for an emergency Quilt of Valor.  Sometimes a little recognition of a veteran's service can bring a good day to an otherwise challenged period.  I will show more later on when the blocks go on the wall -- right now, I'm just chain sewing half square triangles.

In addition, our host Sarah, Confessions of a Fabric Addict,  has called for the last link-up of H2H quilts...my quilt has been shown before (including a tutorial), however it is time to say good by as it travels to Utah for Happy Chemo.

Rainbow Challenge, Pink Stars

Two more Rainbow Stars fill the design wall, a total of 10!

Playing with all the stars!  Every time a color is added, the dynamic changes.   I can only imagine what the year end will bring.

Scrap Control Update

The Blocks are done to my Kitchen Sink (in Pink).

The block rows are labeled and pulled off the wall ready for assembly.

It is now time for another scrappy project to use up the 2 1/2" strips.  It is the largest stash of scraps and needs to be tamed.  I am working on several projects and will need a "leader ender" to keep them moving.

I enjoyed using the 45 degree template (3 1/2") to make the 6 1/2" Kitchen Sink blocks, so I think I may use a 5 1/2" template to make 10" (finished) blocks.  This will require (2) 2 1/2" strips and (1) 1 1/2" strip.  The only problem, I will have to determine if I have enough 26" strips (required to make 8 matching wedges).  If not, the blocks will be scrappier...which is ok with me.

The 4 Patch/9 Patch Blocks are done for pink.   The blocks are finishing at 9", with a goal of making 63 blocks.

Short Stacks Finish

One of my favorite patterns is "Short Stacks", published by Black Cat Creations, designed by Judy Reynolds.  Long before I became a designer for Black Cat Creations, I had already fallen in love with their patterns, especially Short Stacks.  My version finishes 56 x 70" (I left off the border).

As soon as I took this picture, I hurried and shipped it off to Texas for my Great Nephew, Kanon.  As you can see below, he is pleased.  I have a large collection of cowboy/Texas fabric and was able to pull several pieces together.

Scrap Control Update - Kitchen Sink

Ten rows are done -- three left to go!  I finally have a name..."Kitchen Sink" (in Pink), because I have used about every thing but the Kitchen Sink!  I will rotate a few, but otherwise, the blocks are almost ready to come down and piece together.  I better start thinking of another Scrappy project as my leader-ender (Bonnie-ism) for graduation, a retirement quilts, which are also close to coming off the design wall.

Scrap Control Update - Week 2

Almost done with Row 7!  My goal is 13 rows, but the good news .... I have run out of the 3 1/2" strips used to cut the 45 degree units.  The duffel bag is empty, so now I am going to attack the plastic bins storing odds and ends sorted by colors.  I will grab a handful from each bin and cut them down to 3 1/2", 2 1/2", 2" and 1 1/2" strips.

These color bins are also used to make my rainbow blocks for the 2018 Rainbow Challenge.  This month, the color is pink -- and there is a BIG bin of pink.  I make a Breast Cancer Awareness  quilt every year, so the pink leftovers are abundant.

I still have two deadline quilts (graduation and retirement) - so the units above are growing slowly.  The graduation quilt is also a Memory Quilt, using shirts from this young man's grandfather, two great grandfathers and grandmother.   Both are generating more scraps, however I won't touch those until both quilts are finished (just in case I make a mistake).
